John Pothof

John Pothof, age 74, of Randolph, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, May 20, 2023.

John was born in Chicago, Illinois on May 11, 1949, a son of John and Dorothy (Koster) Pothof. He was a graduate of Timothy Christian School.  John entered into service with the U.S. Air Force where he served from 1970 – 1974. On May 25, 1974, he was united in marriage to Patricia DeVries at Second Christian Reformed Church in Randolph, WI. He dedicated 27 years to Dodge Correctional Institute and retired in 2001 as a correctional officer. John was an avid reader, enjoyed outdoor activities, such as hunting, trap shooting, and playing horseshoes with his local friends. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and dog “Lady”. John was a lifelong devoted fan of the Chicago Bears and Cubs. He was also known for his epic Christmas light displays every year that he won a number of awards for. John was a longtime member of Second Christian Reformed Church of Randolph where he served as an elder.

John is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Pat Pothof; three children, Jeffrey (Christen) Pothof, Paula (Matt) Van Buren and Jason (Lindsay) Pothof; eight grandchildren, Lydia Van Buren, Natalie Pothof, Timothy Van Buren, Lilah Pothof, Nora Pothof, Kaylee Van Buren, Harrison Pothof and Kinley Van Buren; two sisters, Diane (Harry) Sawyer and Valerie (Rick) Shields; sister-in-law, Justine Boomsma; brother-in-law, Alan (Cindy) DeVries; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law, Peter DeVries; mother-in-law, Nina DeVries; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Harris and Theresa DeVries and brother-in-law, James Boomsma.

Visitation for John will be held from 9:00 am to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 26, 2023, at Second Christian Reformed Church, 332 Tamarack Street, Randolph, WI 53956.

A funeral service for John will be held following the visitation at 11:00 a.m. at church with Rev. Keith Buist officiating. Burial will take place at Randolph Cemetery with Military Honors provided by Randolph VFW Post 9210 Honor Guard.
