Dayton Morris Ter Beest, a gentle soul and dedicated member of his community, passed away on February 12, 2025, at the age of 100.
He was born in the Township of Alto on July 27, 1924, son of Henry and Hattie (Veleke) Ter Beest. Though faced with a severe hearing deficit at the age of 16, Dayton never allowed the ensuing disability keep him from living a productive life.
As a young boy, Dayton received his education in a one-room school house of the Monroe School District. After graduating from 8th grade, he began work as a hired hand helping his father on the family farmstead which was established in 1864. After the death of his parents, Dayton managed the farm well into his 90’s. In addition, he was a co-owner of the Waupun Tile Drainage Company with his cousin.
In addition to his work and commitments, Dayton had a passion for bowling, engaging in the sport well into his late 80’s. He also loved hunting and spending time outdoors, enjoying the beauty that nature provided. His gentle personality shone through in his unwavering desire to help others, contributing to the life of his church where he was a dedicated member of the Alto Reformed Church.
Dayton is survived by his nieces and nephews, Jim (Rachel) Ter Beest; Mary Steinbeck; Anne Plageman; John Ter Beest and Ruth (Rollie) Vander Lee. He is further survived by other relatives and friends who will remember him fondly.
