Alice Hoffman, age 83 of Friesland went home to her heavenly Father on Friday, November 11, 2016 after a 12 year struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She was a resident at Golden Years Assisted Living in Randolph WI.
Alice was born on July 2, 1933 to Dewey and Martha (Alsum) Douma and was the sixth of nine children. Alice was a teacher at Randolph Christian School for a short time. On October 19, 1951 she was married to Melvin Hoffman at East Friesland Christian Reformed Church. Alice and Mel lived and farmed together near Friesland their entire married life until the time her condition declined to the point where she required more care than could be given at home. Alice was a self-taught, accomplished seamstress. She sewed numerous bridal and bridesmaid’s dresses including those for her daughters. Al and Mel often sang together for many church events and special occasions. Alice was a life-long member of First Randolph Christian Reformed Church where she sang in the choir and enjoyed serving with the Martha Circle.
Mel and Al were blessed with three daughters; Marilyn, Cindy and Linda. The family recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
Alice is survived by her husband of 65 years, Melvin. Daughters; Marilyn (Bernie) Oosterwyk, Cindy (Cal) Van Beek and Linda (Steve) Kok all of Randolph. Nine grandchildren; Eric and Dan Oosterwyk, Barry (Niki) Van Beek, Amy Jo (Scott) Reed, Troy (Jennie) Van Beek, Alison (Nate) Van Ee, Staci (Nick) Campbell, Jaimie Kok and Kristen Kok. Eleven great-grandchildren; Graeme and Liana Van Beek, Tessa, Annika and Vince Reed, Claire, Gwen and Vera Van Beek, Logan and Everly Campbell, Kana Van Ee and a great-granddaughter expected in January.
Alice is also survived by her siblings; Dorothy Schaalma, Theresa Posthuma, Clarence (Shirley) Douma, Bessie (Lambert) DeJager, Andy (Tessie) Douma and Harvey Douma and her in-laws; Evelyn Douma, John (Evelyn) Hoffman, Ron (Harriet) Hoffman, Cora (Brian) Hemp, Caroline Heeringa, Joann (Marvin) Alsum.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Auke Douma and Gerrit Douma, in-laws Margie Douma, John Schaalma, Carl Posthuma, Tena (Bill) Dykstra, Agnes (Ed) Westra, Jake (Margie) Hoffman, Carl (Myrt) Hoffman, Norman Herringa and Bob Lemmenes
Visitation for Alice will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, November 17, 2016 at First Randolph Christian Reformed Church, N8879 East Friesland Road, Friesland and on Friday, November 18th at church from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service.
A funeral service for Alice will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, November 18, 2016 at First Randolph Christian Reformed Church. Burial to follow at Friesland Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Golden Years Assisted Living and Hillside Hospice for the compassionate care and assistance, especially Rita Burmania.
