Joel J. Koopmans, age 74 of Randolph, passed away on Friday, January 29, 2016 at his home surrounded by family.
Joel was born on January 7, 1942 in Beaver Dam a son of Garrit and Elsie (Alsum) Koopmans. Joel graduated from Randolph High School in 1960. He was united in marriage to Clarice Harmsen on September 5, 1969 in Waupun, WI. Joel was a self-employed carpenter working with some great co-workers and friends. Carpentry was his passion and being busy made him happy. He enjoyed hunting and fishing trips to Canada with friends for many years. Joel was a lifetime member of the First Reformed Church in Friesland. He served as both elder and deacon and was also willing to keep things fixed around the church.
Joel is survived by his wife, Clarice and daughter Sarah (Todd) Leystra of Randolph; three grandchildren, Nate, Nick and Becca Leystra all of Randolph. Also survived by four siblings, Judy (Howard) DeVries, Gary (Kate) Koopmans, Robert (Sherry) Koopmans all of Randolph, and Ray Koopmans of Fox Lake; two sister-in-laws, Nancy (Wally) Neevel of Waupun and Leanne (Larry) Schultz of Fox Lake; many nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Leah Kay in infancy in 1976, his in-laws, Walter and Helen Harmsen and a brother-in-law Glendon Giese.
A celebration of Joel’s life will be held at 11 A.M. on Monday, February 1, 2016 at First Reformed Church, 107 E. Winnebago Street, Friesland, with Pastor Rob Ford officiating. Burial will follow in the Randolph Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 31, 2016 from 4-7 P.M at the church and on Monday February 1, 2016 beginning at 10 A.M. until the time of service.
A memorial fund has been established in Joel’s name.
