Arnold Edward Dethmers, age 91 and a long- time resident of Waupun, passed away on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at Clearview Nursing Home in Juneau.
Arnold was born on April 13, 1923 in Sheldon, Iowa, a son of Hessel and Harriet (Gysbers) Dethmers. He was united in marriage to Marian Hansen on May 28, 1948. Arnold’s family was moved to Waupun in 1927 after the death of his father. He was educated in Waupun and worked for the Gysbers Grocery Store for a couple of years prior to joining the U.S. Marine Corp in December 1942. He trained in the United States for one year before being shipped out in January of 1944 to the Battle of the Marshall Islands. Later, he was involved in the Battles of Saipan/Tinian and in 1944 the Battle of Iwo Jima. Arnold was in a Guam training camp preparing for the invasion of Japan when the war ended. He was discharged in December 1945 and returned back to work at the Grocery Store and Teepie Shoes. Arnold worked for John Deere in Horicon for 25 years. While there, he worked part time building an insurance business. In 1972, he became a full time agent for State Farm Insurance Companies and retired in 1989.
Arnold is survived by his son Bruce (Carol) Dethmers and daughter Gail (Paul) Emery; three grandchildren Brett (Becka), Andrea and Shelby, one great grandchild Britton and two sisters Esther and Dorothy; nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Marian, brothers John and Harold and sisters Anne, Ruth, Mildred, and Hazel.
A celebration of Arnold’s life will be held at 12 noon on Monday, January 26, 2015 at Trinity Reformed Church, 521 S. Madison Street, Waupun, with Rev. John White officiating. Burial will take place at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery with Military Honors provided by American Legion Post 210 Honor Guard.
Visitation will be held at church on Monday, January 26th from 10 A.M. until the hour of service.
