Margaret was born on August 25, 1921 in the Town of Randolph, the daughter of Sam and Martha (Dykstra) Smits. After graduating from Randolph High School, she attended Columbia County Normal School and obtained her teaching degree. She taught at area country schools for three years and on September 23, 1943 married Gerben Cupery. They were engaged in farming near Randolph and retired in 1969, moving to the village of Randolph. Dedicating herself first to her family, Margaret took on a teaching position at the Randolph Christian School and continued teaching for thirty-three years. Margaret was a caring, patient, understanding person with a heart for students and following her retirement, she volunteered at the Christian School for ten years. Margaret was a cook at the Continental Manor for a number of years, where her gentle nature was a blessing to both residents and staff. Margaret was a lifelong member of Friesland Reformed Church where she taught adult Sunday School, was active with Vacation Bible School, belonged to the Dorcas Society, and Women’s Missionary Society. Margaret enjoyed working puzzles, playing scrabble, and was an avid reader. She loved visits from her family and friends. She really enjoyed visits from the younger family members and loved their gifts of art. Visit from the nurses and nurse’s aides were always appreciated.

Margaret is survived by three children: Mary (Walter) Wiersma, Friesland, Robert Cupery, and fiance Pat Pahl, Randolph, Doris (Terry) Navis, Hilton Head, S.C., seven grandchildren, Randy (Jenny) Wiersma, Marsha (Randy) DeVries, Wally Gerb (Melanie) Wiersma, Brian (Deb) Cupery, Brad (Nancy) Cupery, Jacie (Mike) Sardilli, Chad (Michelle) Navis, seventeen great-grandchildren, two sisters: Bernice Visser, Waupun, Beverly (Dick) Vander Voet, Mt.
