Florence was born on Feb. 28, 1922, in the Netherlands, daughter of Wijnsen and Aafke (Vander Weit) Bruinsma. Florence enjoyed the simple things in life, like gardening, playing euchre, riding through the marsh enjoying the beauty of nature and going out to eat with her husband. She also enjoyed knitting and crocheting. Florence was a faithful member of both the Second Christian Reformed Church of Randolph and recently Emmanuel Reformed Church of Waupun. She loved to sing the hymns and often commented on the "wonderful messages" given by the pastors. She was a courageous woman during World War II when she and her family hid her brother and her future husband during the Nazi occupation in the Netherlands. On June 1, 1948, she united in marriage to Newton Vander Woude in Holland. In July of 1953 Florence her husband and three children immigrated to the United States and settled in Randolph where they resided for 56 years. In 2009, they moved to Waupun.
Florence is survived by Newton, her husband of 63 years; five children Alice (Lloyd) Satterfield, Texas; Edward "Woody" (Helen) Vander Woude, TX; Janice (Todd) Andrews, Eau Claire; Margaret (Norman) Kary, Texas; Kathleen (Marc) Clements, Waupun; 10 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She is further survived by two sisters and one brother in the Netherlands.
She was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.
A celebration of Florence's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the Emmanuel Reformed Church, 400 W. Brown St., with the Rev. Calvin Vande Zande and the Rev. Karl Bratt officiating. Burial will follow in the Randolph Cemetery. Luncheon will follow burial at the Second Christian Reformed Church, 332 Tamarack St., Randolph.
Florence's family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sept. 13, at Kohls Community Funeral Home 405 W. Main St., Waupun, and on Wednesday at the church from 10 a.m. until the hour of service.
A memorial fund has been established for the Randolph Christian School.
