Bert Harry Hopp, age 93 of Waupun, died peacefully on Friday, February 5, 2009 at Agnesian Healthcare Hospice Home of Hope in Fond du Lac, WI.
Bert was born on November 1, 1916 in the Town of Waupun, Fond du Lac County, a son of Edward and Hattie (Vande Kolk) Hopp. He married Mildred Schouten on June 2, 1939 in Alto and they enjoyed 53 happy years together. Bert was a life-long area resident and he operated a farm for many years. In addition to farming, Bert was employed as a milk hauler, and also worked at the M&M Gray Iron Foundry in Waupun for many years. Upon retirement, he continued to enjoy driving tractor and helping his sons with fieldwork. Bert was an active member of First Reformed Church in Waupun. He served as an elder and sang in the First Reformed Church Men’s Chorus. Bert was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed watching the Milwaukee Brewers, Milwaukee Bucks, Green Bay Packers, and Wisconsin Badgers. Bert also enjoyed playing cards with family and friends.
Bert is survived by his six children, Elton (Carol) Hopp, Arvid (Marilyn) Hopp, Larry (Karen) Hopp, and Jerry Hopp of Waupun, Orrin (Susan) Hopp and Brenda (Fred) Posthuma of Beaver Dam; ten grandchildren, Calvin (Debbie) Hopp, Jeff Hopp, Connie (Josh) Navis, Dean (Amy) Hopp, Tracy Hopp, Michael Hopp, Krista (Brian) Frye, Ashley Hopp, Josh (Denise) Posthuma, and Joe Posthuma; nine great grandchildren, and one great great granddaughter. He is also survived by his brother, Elmer (Annice) Hopp, one sister, Milly Armga, a brother-in-law Casey Schaalma, and other relatives and friends.
Bert was preceded in death by his wife Mildred in 1993; four sisters, Lila (Andy) Buwalda, Marion (Robert) Beekman, Gladys Schaalma, Helen (Roy) Vande Zande; one sister-in-law Junice Hopp, a brother-in-law, Lester Armga, and his parents.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 10, at the First Reformed Church, 422 West Franklin Street, Waupun, with the Rev. Paul Wernlund officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens in the Town of Trenton.
Bert’s family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, February 9, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Kohls Community Funeral Home, 405 West Main Street, Waupun, and on Wednesday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of services.
A Memorial Fund has been established in Bert’s name for Agnesian Healthcare Hospice Home of Hope, 400 County Road K, Fond du Lac, WI 54935.
