Florene Helen Solberg

Florene Helen Solberg, age 93 of Waupun, died on Saturday, August 8, 2009 at Waupun Memorial Hospital.

Florene was born on May 13, 1916 in Clark County, WI, a daughter of Reinhard and Louisa (Grosnick) Zickert. She moved to Waupun in 1942, and was employed as a telephone operator for a number of years. On June 14, 1952, Florene was united in marriage to Clayton Solberg at Immanuel Lutheran Church. They remained Waupun residents and for seventeen years Florene worked as a machine operator at Sandknit Medalist. She used her gift as a seamstress throughout her life and enjoyed sewing and quilting for family members and friends. Florene was a longtime active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where she was involved in the Women’s Ministries; the Quilters Club; and assisted in bulletin assembly. She was also an avid gardener.

Florene is survived by Clayton, her husband of fifty-seven years; her daughter, Chloe (Wayne) Evans, Rochester, MN; her son, Steven (Mary) Solberg, Slinger, WI; five grandchildren, Louise Osterman, CO; Dennis (Charlene) Evans, Plainview, MN; Michael (Deanna) Evans, Dodge Center, MN; Zachary and Josiah Solberg, both of Slinger; four great-grandchildren, Jerry, Christopher, Allysa, and Emma; her sister Lorraine (Orlie) Uttech, NC; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Florene was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Vicki Kalakowski in 1990; her grandson, Jason Evans in 1979; six brothers, Martin, George, Percy, Francis, Chester, and Glenn Zickert; and a sister, Isabelle Keach.

A Service to Celebrate Florene’s Life will be at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at Kohls Community Funeral Home, 405 West Main Street, Waupun. A private family inurnment will be at a later date.

The family will receive visitors and friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 12:00 noon until the hour of service.

A Memorial Fund has been established for the Waupun Area Animal Shelter, 901 N. Madison Street, Waupun; and for the Immanuel Lutheran Church, 525 W. Main Street, Waupun.
