Martin L. Steenbergen, age 86 of Waupun, died on Sunday, April 5, 2009 at the Hospice Home of Hope in Fond du Lac.

Marty was born on January 20, 1923 in the Netherlands, a son to Leonardus and Wilhelmina (Coenraad) Steenbergen. He attended Bakery Trade School and then immigrated to Kimberly, Wisconsin area. He returned to the Netherlands and was united in marriage to Mary Van Beuningen on September 25, 1951. They returned to the United States and settled in Appleton, Wisconsin. Then later they moved to Menomonee Falls where Marty worked for Super Valu. In 1968 they moved to Waupun, where Marty owned and operated Martin’s Bakery for ten years. After closing the bakery, he worked for Valley Baker’s of Neenah, as a salesman and troubleshooter until he retired in 1986. Martin was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, the Valley Baker Coop, Concerned Bakers of Wisconsin, the Waupun Chamber of Commerce, Lion’s Club, and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed woodworking, oil painting and playing the guitar and zither.

Martin is survived by Mary his wife, of fifty-eight years; one son, Leon and his wife Lori Steenbergen of Waupun; four grandchildren, John (Betsy) Steenbergen, Phoenix, AZ; Jeff (Natasha) Steenbergen, Watertown, WI; Jill Steenbergen, Oshkosh, WI; Jessi Steenbergen, UW Platteville, WI; two brothers, Antoon (Tilly) Steenbergen, and Benjamin Steenbergen, both from the Netherlands. He is also survived by several nieces, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Dia Langendyk.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 118 West Main Street, Waupun, with the Rev. Michael Sturm officiating. Burial will follow in the Calvary Cemetery.

Martin’s family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the hour of service.

A Memorial Fund has been established for the Hospice Home of Hope, 239 Trowbridge Drive, Fond du Lac, WI 54935.
