Jennie Syens, age 84 of Friesland, went to her Eternal Home on Sunday, July 19, 2009 at Golden Years Senior Living in Randolph, where she has resided for the past two years.

Jennie was born in the Town of Randolph on December 22, 1924, a daughter of Ray and Sadie (Stiemsma) Alsum. On January 25, 1946 she married John “Jack” Syens in East Friesland. Jennie worked as a Library Assistant for the Cambria – Friesland School District for twenty-six years and later volunteered her time for the school. She resided her entire life in Friesland and contributed to the community as a clerk at the Friesland Post Office and for a time was the acting Postmaster. She was also a Village of Friesland assessor for twenty-five years. Jennie was a lifelong member of the First Reformed Church in Friesland, where she served in many capacities. She was the former bulletin editor for the church, and also served as President of the Mission Guild. For several years Jennie shared her love of flowers with the congregation by serving on the flower committee. Jennie was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and friend with a giving nature who truly enjoyed life. She volunteered at the Beaver Dam Care Center for several years. She was a member of Unit #401 American Legion Auxiliary of Cambria. Jennie enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and playing cards.

Jennie will be missed dearly by her son Russell (Ruth) Syens of Friesland; two daughters, Angela (Lawrence) Dylak of Randolph; and Susan Burmania of Friesland; nine grandchildren, Michelle (Brad) Bruxvoort; Jason (Jean) Syens; Russell Syens; Andrea Syens; Matthew (Loreli) Jenkins; Jennifer (Lee) Knutson; Carrie (Brian) Lord; Anell (Richard) Schoemann, and Lisa (Brent) Flier. She is also survived by sixteen great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Marion Alsum of Friesland.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1989; her parents; and a brother Gerrit Alsum.

A Service to Celebrate Jennie’s life will be at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at First Reformed Church, 107 East Winnebago St., Friesland, with the Rev. Rob Ford Officiating. Burial will follow in the Friesland Cemetery.

Jennie’s family will receive relatives and friends at the church on Tuesday, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.
