Joan Greta Montsma, age 71, went to her heavenly home on Saturday, December 6, 2008, at her Waupun residence.
Joan was born on April 17, 1937 in Fond Du Lac, the daughter of Elmer and Kate (Dykstra) Kemink. Following her high school graduation, Joan attended Dordt College, earning her teaching certificate with the first graduating class. She taught for the Christian Schools in Delavan and Waupun. Joan was united in marriage to Peter Montsma on August 2, 1957 at First Christian Reformed Church in Waupun where she has been a longtime member. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who enjoyed homemaking, baking, and spending quality time with her family. Joan was an active volunteer for many years at Central Wisconsin Christian Schools where she helped out as a substitute teacher, a teacher’s aide, and most recently a committed worker at Bargains Galore Thrift Store. Her musical talent was put to use as an organist for her church and the Waupun United Methodist Church for over twenty years. She also fulfilled her passion for music by playing organ at Lake Alfred Ministries in Winter Haven, Florida, where she and Pete wintered for the past thirteen years. Besides playing organ, Joan enjoyed Coffee Break Bible Study and Christian Fellowship group at the First CRC Church. She was employed at Something New in Waupun for several years.
Joan is survived by Peter, her husband of fifty-one years; two sons, Bryan and his wife Noreen Montsma; Daniel and his wife Gladys Montsma, her daughter, Katie and her husband Gary DeJager, all of Waupun; seven grandchildren, Todd Montsma, Sioux Center, IA; Amie (Tony) Riel, Edgerton, WI; Justin Montsma, Waupun; Ashley (Scott) Fry, Mayville; Austin Montsma, Waupun; Alexis and Aubryn DeJager, Waupun; and three great-granddaughters, Melissa and Shelby Fry; and Noelle Riel. She is further survived by her twin sister, Joyce Vriezen of Delavan; brothers and sisters-in-law, Arie and Shirley Terpstra; Sylvia Montsma; Theresa Vegter; John and Eva Montsma; Henry and Alice Heeringa; Ted and Thelma Montsma; Bill and Edna Kelder; Burton Montsma; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her parents-in-law, Edward and Bernice Montsma; four brothers-in-law, Howard and Gus Montsma, Gerald TerSteege, Harry Vegter; and her sister-in-law, Martha TerSteege.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at First Christian Reformed Church, 20 Bly Street, Waupun, with the Rev. Craig VanHill officiating. Burial will follow at Alto Cemetery.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at Kohls Community Funeral Home, 405 West Main Street, Waupun from 4 – 7 p.m. and on Wednesday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the hour of service.
