Lester Loomis Armga, age 83 of Waupun was called home by his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, October 7, 2008 surrounded by his loving family at the Hospice Home of Hope, Fond du Lac.
Lester was born on December 26, 1924 in Waupun Township, the son of John and Agnes (Loomis) Armga. He graduated from Waupun High School, Class of 1943. Lester enlisted in the United States Army, and served with the 263rd Medical Battalion in the South Pacific, and in Japan as occupational troops. He earned various medals including Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Arrowhead, and Meritorius Unit Award. On October 24, 1947, he married Millie Hopp in Waupun. They farmed in the Waupun area until moving to town in 1978. For a number of years they owned and operated The Flower Shop. Lester enjoyed woodworking and besides making special gifts, he was employed as a carpenter for local contractors. He was a Charter member of Trinity Reformed Church where he served as Elder, Deacon, and Sunday School teacher. Lester was dedicated to the Cattaraugus Cemetery Association where he served as President. He was a devoted community worker, volunteering his time for various local organizations. He enjoyed camping, and they wintered in Florida for fifteen years. Lester belonged to the Getchel-Nelson American Legion Post 210 and Bentley-Hull VFW 6709, participating in the Color Guard, and was named Waupun Veteran of the Year in 2005.
Lester will be missed and is lovingly survived by Millie, his wife of sixty years; two daughters, Linda Harmsen, Fox Lake; Cheryl (Dave) Baker, Waupun; his son, Randy (Barb) Armga, Waupun; seven grandchildren, Tammy, Erik, Adam, Ashley, Alex, Austin and Avery; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Viola “Bud” Kwakkel, and Maylene “Puts” (James) Schultz, all of Waupun; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Lois Skord and Agnes “Blondie” Vande Kolk; and a brother-in-law, Leonard Kwakkel.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 on Saturday, October 11, 2008 at Trinity Reformed Church, 521 South Madison St., Waupun, with the Rev. Thomas Daubenspeck officiating. Burial will follow in the Cattaraugus Cemetery with military honors provided by Getchel-Nelson American Legion Post 210 and Bentley-Hull VFW 6709.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, October 10, 2008 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Kohls Community Funeral Home, 405 W. Main Street, Waupun, and on Saturday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the hour of services.
A memorial fund has been established in Lester’s name.
